We now move into a selection of morning Ragas, all with nuances and characteristics that a student at this level should be able to grasp: Gurjari Todi, which is very similar to Miya Ki Todi that the student has learnt earlier, except that it has no Pancham, another prakaar of Todi Bhupal Todi and Bilaskhani Todi which is actually more like Bhairavi, and Komal Rishabh Asavari, a Raga that is very similar to Bilaskhani Todi. The principle of their being morning melodies with distinct personalities, that define essential Rasas will be explored through the study of these three Ragas in this course Theory – Review time theory of Ragas, Principles of the formation of a Raga, Gram,Moorchana

Objectives

  • To sing Swar Aalap in the Ragas Gurjari Todi, Bilaskhani Todi and Komal Rishabh Asavari
  • To learn a Bada Khayal with development in Gurjari Todi
  •  To learn a Dhrupad in Raga Gurjari Todi with Aalap, Jod and Jhala
  • To learn a Bada Khayal in Komal Rishabh Asavari with Badhat and Taan
  • To learn Chhota Khayals with development in Ragas Gurjari Todi, Komal Rishabh Asavari and Bilaskhani Todi
  • To go through comparative Raga descriptions of Ragas Komal Rishabh and Shuddh Rishabh Asavari from Bhatkhade’s Kramik pustak malika and Rag Vigyan by Patwardhan

 

The student has completed HV403 at the academy OR the student has learnt Hindustani Vocal for above 8.5 years. The student needs to fulfill the pre requisites set by the academy.

The student is able to

  • Present Gurjari Todi and Komal Rishabh Asavari  for 45 minutes, with detailed Aalap, Bada Khayal with development, Chhota Khayal with development
  • To present Bilaskhani Todi Raga learnt in this course for 15 minutes with Short Aalaap, Chhota Khayal with development
  • Present Chhota Khayal in Bhupali
  • To understand, appreciate and apply the subtleties brought in by adding one single Swara in a Raga or by changing one single Swara in a Raga.
